The part of the world we live in (Doha), has an extremely hot, long summer and hence the yearning became a reality only after getting to live at a comfortable place where the wind could do little harm to our garden. My husband and I were so much into it and we had to start from the scratch, though we had tried past years to grow something each season. Here the yield was overwhelming. Now that we had to move again, those years of our stay will remain as pretty memories with us throughout our lifetime.
The best time for planting is September and the season lasts till the onset of summer by late March. While Petunia is the seasonal flowering plant available in varied hues, Bougainvillea grows round the year. In our small vegetable patch we had the pleasure of growing varied veggies like Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Ladies fingers, Long Beans, Ash gourds, Snake gourds, Bitter gourds and many more. To our surprise we could even grow leafy vegetables like Cabbages and Cauliflowers too.

The above contrivance was designed and hand-crafted by my husband who basically engineers everything he can, a perfect embodiment of his profession. I am graced by his support throughout my life, and to mention here, in gardening, he setup an automatic watering system for the garden. Our family, as a whole had spent ample time of togetherness in our backyard. Although this happened only occasionally, as we were stretched out due to various reasons. My son took the initiative to program an auto watering system which was initially operated via internet even when we were in our home country on vacation. Later this was replaced by a mechanical system. My daughters never forgot to add something to the garden each time they paid a visit.
Our smart fluffy new family member who loves everything in the garden except for cats and birdies. He enjoys veggie treats as well.
Since being shifted to an apartment, we have been trying all kinds of permutations and combinations to grow a garden in our confined balcony space and even indoors through later years. Although these haven’t been completely futile, we are yet to get great yields as before. Though the lack of sunlight and the course of wind keep on threatening to make our efforts in vain, we continue with our trials, and believe that its the spirit behind “Living in the present”
Finally after moving to Pearl Qatar and enjoying the seas & nature, found happiness in getting connected to wonderful community of garden lovers.
